IBM Thinkpad R51

#1 Post by nick10 » Tue Oct 14, 2008 10:55 am

Hello I am a new member. I write this post from my recently bought IBM Thinkpad R51. I bought this used from a friend of mine in excellent condition. I am very pleased from this. I use the laptop for my university, so I do not need a powerful laptop. I have some questions: 1)How works the Ultranav system; and 2) Is anything I should know to use my laptop properly;

You use either the TrackPoint or the touchpad.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on getting your R51! (I have one too!) :D

If you far prefer one over the other between the TrackPoint and touchpad, you can disable one via either the UltraNav software, or through the BIOS. I find that having the touchpad disabled helps me to keep from accidentally clicking the mouse on it when I'm typing.

It's for scrolling, with the trackpoint it's used as a way to imitate a scroll wheel. I like to also use it in Firefox, middle clicking a link opens it in a new tab.

Make sure you get the latest trackpoint/touchpad driver from Lenovo website.

Once you have the driver installed, you may want to add the following lines:

; Firefox
*,*,firefox.exe,*,*,*,WheelVkey,0,9

in tp4table.dat (use notepad to edit) to enable the horizontal scrolling in Firefox browser. Hope this helps :)

No Flexview. Your screen is the common 14" XGA with 1024x768.

Thank you for your answers. I use this laptop for about 3 weeks and it has not show any problems although it is used for several years from the friend who had it. I also managed to enable the scrolling with the trackpoint thanks to the System Update that I downloaded from the Lenovo's site. And one of the advantages of my Thinkpad, is this forum, where everyone can find solutions to any problems come around with his Thinkpad: He can simply search the forum about anything he wants for his Thinkpad.

PS
I still wonder what are the signs next to the sign of the battery in the down side of the screen( the signs next to the R51 logo)
