R60e: Keyboard issues

#1 Post by uberT » Mon Oct 20, 2008 12:00 pm

I'm having a very strange situation with our R60e (0657-3ZU). It's almost as it somebody spilled a can of soda into the keyboard - - the keys move with a very "sticky", slow action. They all seem fully functional, but something is not right.

I can see absolutely no evidence of a spill and there is no residue anywhere that you'd expect following a spill. The keyboard looks practically new. If it wasn't a spill, what else might cause this lethargic action?

Also, how can I look up the P/N for a replacement keyboard? I might just order another and pop it in. It doesn't look too difficult.

thanks.

Download the HMM here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-64200

Full instructions on how to take your R60e apart down to the last screw. It also includes all the part numbers.
Keyboard is normally 2, 3 or 4 screws only, accessible from the bottom.
When you lift the keyboard up, there's also a flat cable that you need to carefully disconnect.
You'll find the part number also on the bottom of the keyboard.

RBS, you're the best !

OK, I had already grabbed that doc and will un-bolt the thing tonight. I've had it apart before when I added ram so I am somewhat familiar.

I was hoping to grab the P/N so I could figure out who had a new keyboard.

Thx!

I got the keyboard apart and did find sticky clear residue underneath the keyboard. it seems to be covering about the left half of the keyboard, the right half seems fine.

Is there any way to clean this with contact spray, etc?

The keyboard is still useable but I suspect it will get worse as the soda (or whatever it is) dries up.

Thx.

Guys, I've got the FRU (No. 39T7178) and a Parts (No. 39T7148). Which one do I order by? The FRU number is quite a bit cheaper than the "Parts" number.

Thanks.

(Any suggestions on good places to order from?)
