Does Window Vista work on the R40e

#1 Post by hmh » Tue Oct 21, 2008 11:34 am

This information is pretty important for various reasons, including better Linux support for the R40e(!)

Does anyone knows whether Windows Vista 32-bit boots fine on the R40e?

You don't state if you have a 16MB RADEON or 32MB RADEON ATI Mobility chipset, Which would make a difference.

My opinion is R40e would be better suited for XP. With Vista I don't think you would see real good performance.
I have a R40 that I dual boot XP and Suse Linux.

I wouldn't suggest it...none of the graphic cards used on R40e (or for that fact R40) is supported by Vista....

The point is not actually use Vista, but know if it runs...

Actually, I'd appreciate knowing if it works because of a failure that exists on the R40e and R50e BIOSes, and which we [linux kernel developers] would very much like to track down how Vista avoids tripping.

So, it would be ok if it runs slowly, as long as it doesn't hard-crash.

XP does this part of the ACPI stuff very differently, so it doesn't trip the BIOS bug.

Well, people have installed Vista on regular R40 machines, having to load video drivers manually and "fooling" Vista into believing that it's dealing with Radeon 9600 as opposed to Radeon 7500...

I have yet to hear of anyone installing Vista on R40e or for that fact R50e...

Good luck with your noble quest.
