Only really getting half of my hard drive space?

I recently noticed that my 80g hard drive was getting full, so i did a bit of cleaning and got a bit of space back. However I was kind of surprised that it had filled up that fast. So I did a little counting and found that when i looked at the properties of the drive it said it was at 70g but i could only find about 35g total in all of my files. Is this due to some lame backup system? or does my drive just have some major issues?

It's probably Lenovo's "Rescue & Recovery". You'll probably find plenty of threads about this around here if you search for it.
