G40 processor upgrade

#1 Post by cliddell » Mon Nov 17, 2008 10:53 am

I know similar questions have been asked on this forum already, but (i) I can't find them and (ii) they don't seem to give me the answer I need. I have a 2.4 GHZ G40 and was wondering how easy it would be to upgrade the processor. I assumed at first that the motherboard would be a 'one size fits all' item as far as processor type & speed go. However, Sisoftware Sandra (brilliant piece of software) tells me that my mobo has a 400MHZ FSB speed. Presumably I am limited to a CPU with this speed bus which (after a quick trawl through Fleabay) seems to be a 2.4 GHZ i.e. what I have already! Perhaps I am missing something obvious? All advice gratefully received.

I have read elsewhere on this forum that a bigger / faster HDD could well give a a better VFM performance boost so perhaps I'll try that.

In a similar vein, is it possible to upgrade a Celeron-equipped TP (e.g. R40, R50, G40) to a full P4 processor without making life too difficult for oneself?

TIA.

According to the Thinkwiki you can put in up to a 3.0GHz CPU as well:

As to upgrading the others, as long as you stay with the same FSB, they will take larger CPUs.
You will probably have to replace the heatsink or fan as well to match them (goes for G40 as well, probably).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

3.0GHz (a rather rare 400MHz bus Pentium IV cpu) is correct.

I just sold my G40 with a 3.0GHz cpu. So I can confirm they exist and work.

You'll need an Intel sSpec SL6YH processor, see link below;
