Do the R series laptops have the GPU flaw?

#1 Post by goldenbb » Thu Nov 20, 2008 9:01 am

I bought my wife a T40 two years ago and it recently succumbed to the GPU flaw. I attempted the reflow repair but it did not work. So I am looking around for another off-lease/refurb unit but I don't want to go near any T4x units. I read on here that the R51 is very similar to the T40 and was hoping to be able to re-use the brand new battery in the broken T40 and have a spare LCD and keyboard for it (our laptops get a lot of wear and tear thanks to a 3-year old who likes to play games on them).

Thanks!

Yes, R5x series have essentially the same MB design as the T4x and also susceptible to the same GPU issue.

However, there are more integrated intel GPU versions that are mostly free of this issue. There are a number of posts that talked about converting to a R5x intel GPU MB.

Maybe I should asking this a different way: What IBM laptops are least susceptible to the GPU flaw?

Here is a related posted that had since been made into a sticky.

Many people have different opinions. I feel all ATI multi-chip BGA have some level of this issue and they are used on T4x, R5x and even on T30. But T30 seems to have the least amount of this issue. The later T42, T43, R51, R52s seems to be better than the earlier T40, T41, R50, R51s. Most of us believe versions with intel GPU are free of this issue.

Okay, that helps.

Funny you mention the T30, that's the other model I currently own. Before that was a T23 that had the little chip fall off inside of it. I fixed that, but it was never quite right again, which is why I got us the T40.
T23 (kaput), T30 (dead, ATI chip), T40 (dead, ATI chip)

Yes, the T30 seems to be pretty reliable. Then it may use the lead contained solder where the later units may use the leadfree solder.
