Video Streaming Issues...

#1 Post by kermani » Wed Dec 03, 2008 1:29 pm

Hey guys I tried google to no avail. I have a r40 2896 I think. It has a 2.0 ghtz and 512 megs of ram. One of my firends computers, which is a crappy 1.8 amd something with 256 meg ram can stream hulu at 480p fullscreen seamlessly. I can't stream 480p in the normal screen. It gets nasty choppy. I have the right video drivers installed (got them from the lenovo driver page) so I don't know where to look next. I'm running XP sp3 btw.

TIA

QUEST TO 480

kermani,

it is not how much memory you have in your system, but how much of it you have available....

do a ctrl alt del together and look @ performance.... check how much is available before you start streaming.... if your bootload is too heavy use msconfig and deselect unnecessary startup items: you can run msconfig under START/ RUN... another thing to check is the wifi signal itself: make sure you dont have a drag on it from other sources or a virus/ spyware streaming packets out of your system...

check your unit @ http://housecall.antivirus.com for rogue software...

It's actually a fresh XP install so I have a fairly un-bogged system. Task manager says that I am using 350 mb of page mem and I have 212xxx kb of physical available...

Oh also about viruses/WIFI stream, I can run Counter strike with a 35 ms ping and since the install has been on for less than 3 weeks and I threw AVG on right away, I wouldn't think I would have a virus.

ok.... make sure that your T is running @ your rated MHZ/ GHZ as the centrino BS throttles your CPU down when "idle"... you can alter the way the throttle works under Power Options in Cntrol Panel by selecting Always On... impact is immediate: check under System Properties General tab prior and after change... another thing: 350megs upon boot is very heavy... make sure that anything loaded is not "paging" the harddrive... close all antivirus, printer/ scanner stuff offf... disable everything momentarily using msconfig and test...

Since you're streaming it from hulu.com, you might be limited by how the speed of your internet connection. I have cheapo DSL and hulu works smoothly with standard resolution, but gets choppy at 480p especially if anyone else in the house is using the internet. The CPU is a limitation only on older machines. For example, my 770X with a PIII 500mhz is choppy on hulu. My TC1100 with a Pentium M clocked down to 600mhz runs it just fine.

I actually have a 10 MBit Connection. Never had streaming issues on any other computers in my network. Even working at the same time...

Yeah I am unfortunately aware of that haha. It's running at 1.2 at idle, but even when I had Ubuntu installed and had it maxed at 2.0 it was still bad. I thought it was ubuntu until I switched back to XP and found the same issue...

I didn't noticed you are talking about stream video, but nevermind...

Try to update your flash player here, just follow the instructions...

When it installs restart your browser, go to hulu.com and during playback right click on the player, select Settings, then select 3rd icon (folder-with-green-arrow icon) and move slider to 100k or 1MB...

Hope it helps...

I re-installed/updated flash player and it play 480p in the standard window just fine now, but fullscreen is still a bit choppy... when I get some dough I'm gonna throw 2gigs of ram in and hope that helps...
