I just bought a use R51 (2888), which apart from a dead battery, is in near mint condition. I installed my own stripped down WinXP on it for maximum XP performance and proceded to download drivers and useful utilities from the official site. It boots swiftly and runs great!
I don't like the default Ultranav functions for the middlemouse, so I, like I did on several other Thinkpads I've worked with over the years, set the middle mouse functionality to "neither" so it will work as a standard middle mouse; very useful in Firefox and in general.
However, it appears that when set to this mode, the middle mouse is completely ignored! I tried plugging in several other mice (old MS ball mouse, logitech MX500 and G5 (all USB)), and their middle button all worked fine without the need for me to do anything.
It works fine when the other features, magnifying glass and scroll, are selected.
I would really like to get that thing working as a middle mouse, as I find it a rather large loss in productivity having to right click and find items in menus all the time instead of just being able to middle click tabs and links.
Thank you
