Can't get video on lcd

#1 Post by pc4pplwmd » Sat Dec 13, 2008 8:29 am

Ok I have a R32 that has a problem, it has no video or let me say that its like the back lite is gone out of it.

1st of I took it apart and made sure everything was ok and found a broken wire on th molex plug that attached to the motherboard. So it has been replaced with 2 different cables.

2nd If i pushed on the inverter it would come on. So it has been replaced with 2 different inverters.

3rd I have tried 5 different screens still no go

4th video works hooked up to an external monitor

5th I even replaced the motherboard and still no go

I have been in the bios and tried every setting still no go

any help????????????

Off hand I'd guess that the lid open switch is defective.

Could be the lid switch. On my T-42 it is close to the left hinge - a small button that gets depressed when you close the lid.

Seems like all the possible parts have already been tried, which leads me to believe that the R32 in question has more then one bad part.
Not really that unusual. The machine might have served as parts donor already.
Some people seem to have the habit of putting the bad part back into the donor machine. Possibly because they do not know for sure whether or not that part is really defective and whether or not that part is repairable.
It all depends of the origin of the items being work with.

In my opinion, the only thing to do is to find something that works. Then, with a working machine, one can try to swap in the remaining parts, one by one. This to get them parts sorted into good and bad parts. Make sure to either throw away or label the bad parts.

The only thing you haven't mentioned is the LCD itself, except for this:
2nd If i pushed on the inverter it would come on.
You may have a wobbly or loose contact of the LCD cable into the LCD.

Responding with just a quote to one self does not make sense to me.
If someone did not understand a sentence to begin with, then one will have to repeat that, using some other wordings and if possible adding additional information.

Edit: minor spilling error corrected

Sounds like you got a whole pile of duff equipment there!
If the original LCD worked when you pushed on the inverter (your 2nd observation), you should continue with that setup!
i.e. the 'starting/original' mobo, cable, inverter and LCD.
Swapping out parts nilly willy does not get you anywhere.

Sorry I confused you, I thought I had explained what was going on rather well.

Also I could see a part or two being bad, but 5 screens. 3 cable kits and 3 inverters? Add to that a new motherboard it does not make sense, well at least to my pee brain.

Is there another way of getting video to the screen that anyone knows of, like a mini pci video card made for this laptop?

I honestly wasn't trying to be a "smart [censored]" with my response, I am just frustrated that this thing is not working and I can not figure it out yet. I have had many ThinkPads over the years and I have never had this happen to me. I am sorry if I offended anyone that was not my intention. I am just looking to the masters for a solution to this problem.

Thank you all for your responses.

OK, lets get back to square one. Right now, if you push on the inverter the LCD will light up? If yes, have you checked the wiring and the connectors into the inverter? If it's not the inverter itself, it has to be a lose connection or short in the wiring into it. Something like bare wire touching metal anywhere will do this. Look for cuts in the power cabling, inspect the wiring carefully. Try moving just the wiring and not the inverter. Use a pair of tweezers to get at the tiny wires to move one at a time if you have to.

Thank you for helping me out. As of now it will only give a very dim screen you have to get right up on and you can barely see. I have tried wiggling the cables and no luck there. I pulled the ram cover and there was a 1 clip not clipped but it registered the ram. Also it does not show any errors or conflicts.

If you have a Samsung LCD for that R32 (FRU 11P8280), could you please give the Samsung part number?
Probably looks very similar to: LTN141X1-L01

I'm trying to compile a list of 14.1" LCDs from different types (and brands), to see if any are interchangeable.
Thanks in advance.

Whoa, you just can't hook up any LCD and expect it to work. Minimally it has to be an IBM FRU, and it has to be the 'right' FRU.
