Upgrade R60 with IPS

#1 Post by ZaZ » Sat Dec 13, 2008 11:05 pm

I was thinking of buying a R60 and upgrading it to a IPS screen, just cause I'm so bored with my current machine and hopefully learn some new skills. I figure if I can sell my current machine, I could buy a 15" model for around the same price. It would only cost me the new screen and any other parts I would need. My machines no longer under warranty so that's not an issue. My machine doesn't leave the house that often so the extra weight isn't a bid deal. Anyone know if firstly if it's possible and secondly if it is possible is there anything I would need besides the screen? Could I upgrade to the UXGA or is the SXGA+ a safer bet? I would prefer the integrated GPU for the battery life, but should I get the dedicated? Thanks for any help.

I see no reason why this wouldn't work...actually I've been toying with the idea myself...boredom is a dangerous thing... :D

Unlike earlier machines, 15" R60 units share the same LCD cable regardless of resolution, so the only thing to change would be the panel itself.

Integrated graphics with SXGA+ would be a nice thing, for UXGA I'd go with discrete, but that's me...

Keep us posted.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, idle hands are the devil's work.

I personally don't really care about the GPU. I have consoles and a couple pretty decent desktops for those needs, which I don't really do much anymore. I would also prefer the extended battery life the integrated card offers. I just hate to buy a UXGA screen, which I think I'd like since it has only a slightly higher PPI than the 14.1" SXGA+ screen I have now, only to find it doesn't work.

I'm just mulling the idea over right now and wanted to know what was involved. I'm not sure I really want the extra weight even though it's only mostly for home use. I like the size of my current machine. It's too bad they never came out with a 14.1" IPS. It would have been the perfect notebook for me. It'd have been nice if someone had done it before so I know if it were possible. Thanks again.

You could also consider buying this exotic beauty:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=70357

Has a 15" screen with QXGA (2048x1536 Flexview screen).

It's only an R50p, but hey...

I did notice that. I'd absolutely love to see one. I don't know that I would have an interest in using one.

Anyone else have an opinion as to whether this will work? I'm eying a couple R60s, but would prefer to know it'll work before I spend any money or at least I've got a fighting chance. Thanks for any help.

There's no doubt in my mind that it can be done. The only question is whether to go with a LCD from T4x/R5x series, or T60.

I have a spare, unused T60 15" SXGA+ IPS LCD that I got from Johan a while ago. If you acquire a machine that you'd consider modding, pay for the shipping and you can have it to test the unit with. If it works, we'll talk turkey, if it doesn't just ship it back in the same condition.

Thanks for the offer. I'll keep it mind. I've been looking here and eBay. You see much more of the 14" models. I posted over in the Marketplace forum to see if anyone has one. I think I might like to try the see if the UXGA model works, but I'll keep it in mind if I decide otherwise.

I've acquired a R60. I'm not sure of the machine type as I've not yet received it, but the specs are:

T2500
1GB
80GB
DVRW
X1400
Bluetooth
Fingerprint Reader
XP Home

Anyone have an opinion as to which is the best screen to try? I'd prefer to try the UXGA, why not go for the best? That's unless I can be convinced it's not best option. From what I've gathered from the most helpful Johan, it seems a T60p screen seems the most likely to work, but I thought I'd ask here in case there's a differing opinion. Also is there anything else I'd need to replace besides the LCD to get this working? Thanks for any help.

Anyone have any experience with [b]spooncomp[/b] on eBay? I found this screen for possible swapping:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0300061858

They say it's new, but seven days seems kind low for a new item. Was wondering if anyone had dealt with them as they seem to sell a fair number of ThinkPad parts. Thanks for any help.

@FredGarvin:
You should go into your User Control Panel, and under Edit Posting Defaults you should TICK Enable BBCode by default.
That will stop the showing of coding characters such as [ b ] and [ / b ] etc. (in real life without the spaces)

That's good to know. Did you have to do anything besides swap the screens? Which panel did you use? Thanks.
