R60 Random Crashes

#1 Post by bhurley » Thu Dec 25, 2008 3:49 pm

My girlfriend's R60 has been going haywire lately; can't tell if it's a Windows problem or a hardware problem.

At random moments, the computer crashes and restarts. Using the Lenovo System Toolbox I found the crash has the 1000007f error message, with parameters 1 000 0000d, 2 000 0000, 3 000 0000, and 4 000 0000. When the computer reboots I get a message saying that Windows had recovered from a serious error; when I report the error the Microsoft site says it's a device driver problem. I'm not running any devices off that machine, apart from a mouse and a wireless connection to my Canon printer (and the error doesn't happen when she's printing, so I don't think it's related to that). I do have a microdump files from each crash; I could post one of those if anyone thinks it could provide useful information.

Any suggestions? I can of course do a Rescue and Recovery and start over from scratch but reinstalling everything is a lengthy process so I'd like to avoid it if possible. Thanks, and happy holidays...

To see the message that results from the crash turn off automatic restart.

Go to control panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery -> Settings -> Uncheck auto restart.

This will leave the blue screen with the error message until you manually restart.

You can then start tracking the error. As far as device drivers/controllers there are many of them runnig on a normal computer.

Have you tried running the Lenovo IBM PC Doctor ?

This one is for DOS but you might find a Windows version that you can burn to CD.

If you run PC Doctor it should determine whether theres any faulty hardware in your machine.

What I did with my R60 was take out the SATA hard drive and install another, use the Lenovo system recovery disks, then restore any documents you need from the old hard drive in a USB caddy.

Thanks for the suggestions so far -- I will try Scott's suggestion. Instead of PC Doctor I used Lenovo's new replacement solution, the Lenovo System Toolbox and ran full diagnostics; everything seems fine except that my graphics card failed the "surface" test (it passed the other tests), so it's possible the graphics card is the problem.
