Chirpping hard drive

#1 Post by johnny9fingers » Sun Dec 28, 2008 1:06 pm

Hello, My R51's hard drive chirps when plugged in. It's quiet as a church mouse until the battery is almost fully charged. How can I fix this. Otherwise this is a wonderful machine......
Thanks,

John

It could be a bad drive, or it's not receiving enough current while running.

Thanks,

Are you sure it is the HDD and not, let's say, the AC adapter?

In the power manager profile, do you set the HDD off timer or is it always on?

Do you have a recent data backup. If not, do a backup now.

Thanks for the response, I hope it's not the HDD, and I'll check the power management profile when I get home. It's weird that it is quiet while charging, then when it is close or fully charged the chirping starts, but not always. I would say this happens between 50 - 75 % of the time. Then when I unplug and run on batteries, the chirping stops......

Thanks again for you input.

That's rather a sign of a dying power supply.
Borrow one from a colleague.

After checking the R51's power settings, I see it is set to never turn off the HDD. I have also noticed, on occassion, the machine clicks when turned off and the ac adapter is plugged in. If it's the ac adapter going bad, can I use the one I got with my T30? They are different in physical size, but have the same input: 100-240 V
50/60 HZ 1.5A-0.9A, and output: 16V - 4.4A

Thank you for your reply. I will give it a try and see if the noise goes away, and report back......
