G40 (?) motherboard with strange Part No.

#1 Post by cliddell » Tue Dec 30, 2008 7:41 am

Hi all

I have recently purchased off Ebay a motherboard purporting to come from a G40. It certainly looks like a G40 mobo but I cannot identify which model(s) it suits. It has the part number 38L4603 while for the FRU a label simply states 'See HMM' i.e. the Hardware Maintenance Manual which is no help at all. In the HMM the mobo part numbers are all '93Pnnnn which is clearly nothing like the number on the board.

Can anyone help identify this or point me in the right direction for more info? I can't find anything on the IBM website.

Thanks in advance.
G40 - P4 2.4 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, 40 GB HDD
G40 currently 2.66 GHz Celeron in throes oof upgrading.

That's not a motherboard, but a CPU:

I think these are the part numbers you are looking for:
HMM Page 41 wrote:System board with bottom heatsink from
238-1xx to 238x-5xx FRU= 93P3314

System board with bottom heatsink from
238x-7xx to 238x-9xx and 238x-Axx to
238x-Cxx FRU= 93P3318

System board for Celeron FRU= 93P4273

System board for Prescott - Integrated VGA
FRU= 93P4274

System board for Prescott - External VGA
FRU= 93P4275
From your signature I think you are looking for the celeron replacement??

Well, it looks as though the motherboard was intended for a Celeron but presumably I can fit a P4 as both chips are Socket 478. Just wanted to know what my options are.

The thought of a G40 or 41 being able to take a Prescott CPU really intrigues me but I guess that is a matter for another post. Stand by for more daft G40 /41 processor questions...
