Portable external USB drive with R52

#1 Post by pbbjr » Thu Jan 08, 2009 3:59 pm

I have an R52 that I want to use with a portable external USB drive. I bought the smallest one I could find (by Oyen Digital) and I like it fine, except that the drive will not be recognized by the R52 unless you connect it to both USB ports on the side of the R52. Since the R52 has only 2 USB ports, that requires me to use a PCMCIA to USB adapter to plug anything else into the drive.

I run XP Pro SP3 on the R52, by the way. 2 gigs of RAM and a 7200 rpm 100gb Seagate for the HD.

Has anyone with an R52 found a portable external USB drive (preferably 300 gb or more) that can be powered by only 1 USB port?

I just fooled around with the cord\port combination, and discovered that the Oyen Digital 320 gb external portable drive I bought does work powered by only 1 port. Apparently, the lower of the 2 USB 2.0 ports on the left side of my R52 18495SU will power the drive by itself.

So I guess I answered my own question. Sorry. :D

If that fails, you can always get an external 5V power supply to power the USB PCMCIA adapter.
