TPFanControl Settings for A31

#1 Post by gb_ibmguy » Thu Jan 15, 2009 6:25 pm

As you may know allready, I Hot Rodded my A31 up to a 2.4. Works great! I'm trying to keep it cool to avoid the A31 problems. I have the A31P fan, all crap blown out of the heat sink, good goo on the cpu etc.
TPFancontrol does work on this unit and I'm looking for some fan settings. I've tried the settings from WIKKI, and they seem to work much better than stock, but.....
My highest CPU temp I've seen is 47C without TPF
As I'm typing this, it's 32c

I've fiddled with the INI file and this is what I'm running now:
Level=0 0
Level=32 2
Level=33 2
Level=34 4
level=35 4
Level=36 5
Level=38 7
Level=40 7

Just wondering if any other A31 Hot Rodders have any suggestions.

Ok, Guess I posted to the wrong forum.
Seems like I should be in the Work Area. Moderator, if you want to move this, feel free.

The only reason I posted here was:
1. This is not a T question.
2. A31's do not have noisy fans
3. A31's DO get hot
4. Letting the BIOS control the fan results in pretty warm temps.(117c before fan start!!)
5. I can not believe that I am the only fellow TP'er that has hot rodded one of these things and am concerned about the heat. I know about the GPU problems and I am trying to avoid it.

The settings I'm using do keep the temps under 40c, but, the fan does run all the time at different levels, but still.... Guess I just need to know what the safe and normal range might be for an A31 with a 2.4 might be.

Any advice will be appreciated

Something wrong with this story...

At 117C, your CPU would've been long gone. Most ThinkPads shut off at 95 degrees C.

Now, what version of TPFC are you running?

My last A31p had a 2.4CPU and I haven't seen the temperature go over 55C. The fan would kick in (TPFC version 0.25) at 53C or something like that...

My T30 with the "weak" fan shoots up to 60C on a regular basis, but I haven't opened it up to clean it yet...and will go into 70s when pressed hard...

Hope this helps.

Your right--my bad, that was 117 F not C, big difference!!! Sorry for the misinformation.

Guess I'm just concearned how hot these thing can run before blowing up. Like I said, with the fan running most of the time, the temp never goes above 40C. While the fan is quiet, with TPFancontrol it does now run most of the time. Coming from a desktop enviroment, some of the standard temps on laptops scare the wee out of me. What temp should I be aiming for?

Thanks

my former t30 - when running a 2.0 with the weak fan - would shoot up to a maximum of 87 degrees celsius (and after applying good goo aka as5 - a max of 83)
that can be called a hot Thinkpad - opposed to the tr451 i'm typing on now - running for almost an hour, wireless on, at 40-41 deg C - the fan off (now i'm just bragging :lol: )
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T

Re: TPFanControl Settings for A31- optimize use for A31P

#6 Post by friedrich-eugen » Sat Jan 24, 2009 8:06 am

Hello,

I 'm interested in using TpFanControl on my A31Ps, runing with Pentium 4M Processors and 2,6 /2.5 Ghz, the "best" possible CPU for an A31P, but a "hotter" CPU than the 2Ghz ones, which have been used by IBM on these machines.

Any advice on how to optimize the different levels and the use of sensors?

I noticed,
- that sensors seem to exist, that probably are wrongly attributed (description seems to be wrong) and I suspect,
- that levels of speed are not adaquately attributed to fan-speed.

My suspicions result from comparing Info from Everest Ultimate to TPFanControl. May be, there exists a listing of sensors/levels/ a specific *ini for the A31P

BTW: I still wonder which of the two fan-types in a A31P is the one for th hotter cpu.

Thanks in advance
