Display problem on R51

#1 Post by willirl » Mon Jan 19, 2009 9:42 am

Hi my Thinkpad R51 has a display problem. Initially white 1px vertical line appeared, now second. RAM checked, all drivers are up to date. When using an external display they do not appear (on the 2nd display). Initially the first white line could be rubbed out by "rubbing" cursor over it. The lines only appear after 5 minutes (when warm).

I suspect that I will have to replace the LCD - if so is it safe to buy a scrap version of the same model off ebay and swop LCDs? (apart from the usual risks associted with 2nd hand kit etc.).

Thanks for your suggestions

If white in color, there are several sub-pixel lines failing in the LCD. These are not repairable.

swapped an LCD at the R51 in my signature (currently my father's) - it was experiencig a white 1-pixel-wide vertical line at the right edge of the screen (whiteish in colour, sometimes greenish)

weirdly enough - after moving the lid - closing/opening - not necesarely all the way (lid switch not activated) or pressing on the led bar - the line dissapeared - only to appear in several minutes
i've suspected a damaged ribbon cable or faulty contact of the panel itself...
the new (used) screen doesnt have this issue - nomatter how in move/open/close it

There are column drivers mounted on FPC then bonded to the glass at the top. If any of the FPC to chip bond or FPC to glass bonds delaminate, there will be these vertical single, multiple lines.

For a XGA panel, there are more than 3,000 vertical lines.

thanks for your answers. Today the original stripe has disappeared but the second still persists - and where this goes over dark blue the stripe goes light blue. Interesting!

With backlight on, dark actually means the pixel is on and bright means it is off.

When it is on, the liquid crystal molecules between the thin film transistors capacitive plates and the color filter are aligned orthogonal to the front and back polarizer, then light is blocked. When the molecules are not aligned, then light comes thru.
