A31p and an 8G MICRO SDHC CARD
I was recently given a Kingston 8G MicroSD HC card. It works with my Toshiba Sattelite A210 (2Gig~Vista SP1) I was going to use the flashcard( or thats what I think its called) to transfer data from the Toshiba to my A31p (My favorite machine)but will not be recognised by it, or any of my Thinkpads using XP Sp3, for that matter!!! It has an USB interfaced adapter and when inserted says "Unrecognised USB device" Alternatively if I insert it into my Sylvania touch screen mp3 player and plug that into my A31p it sees the "drive" as F but when I click on it it states "Drive F not availible insert disk" Has anyone else had this problem with their Thinkpads? Or with the 8Gig SD Micro ?

Re: A31p and an 8G MICRO SDHC CARD
My first thought was that the USB card reader does not support SDHC cards, but since it came with the card, and works with your Toshiba laptop, that isn't it.
Most usb drives work automatically, even with Windows XP. The fact that both your 8gb SDHC and your mp3 player don't work make me suspicious of the USB drivers and/or "plug and play" settings on the Thinkpad.
P.S. Did you know the USB ports on the A31p are USB 1.1, meaning they are very slow(er)? This shouldn't cause compatibility issues even though most products now are USB 2.0 (faster). In my experience, the drives I plug in always work, but Windows just warns me the drive is 2.0 and that it would be slow because the ports are 1.1.

Re: A31p and an 8G MICRO SDHC CARD
I looked at the Kingston site and it states that their memory card it backwards compatible to USB 1.1

Re: A31p and an 8G MICRO SDHC CARD
On an auktion site, a seller offering an 8Gb SDHC card, wrote (I quote):
"Although identical in size to todays standard SD card, the new SDHC cards are designed differently and are only recognized by SDHC host devices. To ensure compatibility, look for the SDHC logo on cards and host devices (cameras, camcorders, etc.). "
Am I correct that your Toshiba laptop has a built in card reader and that you use an other card reader to read the card on your Thinkpad?
If so, your Toshiba's builtin card reader is probably SDHC compatible and the card reader you use on the Thinkpad not. You will need an SDHC compatible card reader.
I found a likewise warning about the use of SDHC (instead of normal SD cards) in the manual of my digital camera. There it is said that SD cards up until 2Gb will work. 4Gb cards only work if they have the SDHC logo. 4Gb SD cards will not work. Thus another indication that SDHC cards work differently from SD cards.

Uh huh, yes Erik, the Toshiba's interface is built in, so far I've not been ABLE to get it to work and have junked the card

Re: A31p and an 8G MICRO SDHC CARD
This seems to be a problem with the USB card reader, which is odd because you said its the card reader that came with the card.Argonaught wrote:Uh huh, yes Erik, the Toshiba's interface is built in, so far I've not been ABLE to get it to work and have junked the card

Re: A31p and an 8G MICRO SDHC CARD
After a lot of searching and reading up I'm of the opinion that Windows XP SP3 is the root of the problem, not the hardware, so as I said I shelved the card and went back to using a 16Gig thumb drive.. case not really solved, but not worth beating myself up about
