Revived dead A30

#1 Post by Phazer » Thu Feb 05, 2009 6:40 pm

With Rays help & guidance. I revived an A30 back from the dead. It was my daughters and she said video went, then it went dead. All I could get it to do was turn the "power" light on and the fan. No HDD activity, no PCMCIA power, and no video.

Didn't see much on here about this symptom, so I started ripping into it. Once I got the MB out, all looked good. Video chip "seemed" tight, no movement at all. Started probing inductors and other surface mount goodies and still, all seemed good. A search for MB at various places wasn't looking too economical and I was almost resigned to throw it in the bone pile, (this had the SXGA screen). Finally I flipped the MB over and probed the few items on the bottom. The inductor located lower/center of the bottom, moved when I brushed up against it.

Ray suggested that I tin the MB pads, and also the inductor pads. While holding it down with my finger, I layed the soldering tip as far down the side of the inductor bracket/mount/terminal until I felt it sink down into the solder. Did the other side and then went back and did the first one again so they were both flat. Had to do this because the solder spots were "rounded" on top and the inductor was real "rocky" while holding it.

Put only the necessary items onto the MB and pushed the power button....and SHAZAM!! After putting each new piece back on, I'd power it up just to make sure. SUCCESS!!!!

THANKS for the tips Ray!!!

Seems to be exactly the same thing as what happened to me.

Apparently my search skills need some improvement.
In your link, scan of bottom, my loose one was at G5.

No fan error.
