A31p CPU Temperature
A31p CPU Temperature
My CPU regularly runs at 85 C - this seems very hot - however no system performance degradation. Is this normal?

Welcome to the forum!
That is VERY high...I've never seen mine go over 65 at the full load, and it idles in the low 40s...this is a 2.0

Re: A31p CPU Temperature
Yeah I fixed it by making the fan run at full speed all the time when it's warm (4800 RPM) - the Smart sensors mode 7 only spins the fan at 3800 RPM. Sometimes the mode drops to 3 even when the CPU is clearly hot.ajkula66 wrote:Welcome to the forum!

I had never delved into the sensors on this machine - it's always worked - but I wonder if the many failed GPU boards (I had one) got that way from overheating?
I wish this model were still made as a Dual Core.

Re: A31p CPU Temperature
Have you cleaned the fan assembly (taken it out and blown some canned air in it)? I've seen these kind of temperatures and higher after using my A31p for more than four years without cleaning the fan.deSitter wrote:My CPU regularly runs at 85 C - this seems very hot - however no system performance degradation. Yes I replaced the system board a few months ago. I did not find much dirt in the fan. This is a Thinkpad after all, it's actually well designed

Re: A31p CPU Temperature
My A31 (original SXGA replaced with UXGA) idles at about 60 degrees. Its been like that ever since I upgraded the CPU from 1.6Ghz to 2.2Ghz. I upgraded the fan at the time too. Under load it goes up to high 60's but hasn't gone past that yet. I thought mine was bad, but yours seems to be way too warm!

Re: A31p CPU Temperature
I'm wondering if there is not some implicit offset being applied, more appropriate to another model. It runs fine and there is little heat on top of the case at the upper left.virge wrote:My A31 (original SXGA replaced with UXGA) idles at about 60 degrees. Re: A31p CPU Temperature
On my A31 that I upgraded from a 1.7 to a 2.4 processor and with a new fan, I idle at 30c and have never seen it go above 60c at full load. I did upgrade the bios and the embedded controller. I'm also running TPFancontrol. If you are interested, here are my settings from TPF:
Level=0 0
Level=28 1
Level=32 2
Level=34 3
level=35 4
Level=36 5
Level=38 7
Level=40 7
maybe a little aggressive, the fan runs most of the time, but it's so quiet, it doesn't bother me. And if it helps avoid a GPU issue, then so be it!

Re: A31p CPU Temperature
Well after speeding up my fan I'm running about 65 or so today. Maybe it had a fever
Also, I spend a lot of time in the attic, so the temperature is quite variable, and it gets really warm up here.

Re: A31p CPU Temperature
I would not use the Fan Control at all. Instead, I suggest setting the CPU performance to Adaptive in the Power Manager instead of Performance.

Figured out my temperature issue with A31p 2.0 GHz
The computer has been sitting directly on a metal-cased VCR/DVD player - the case was reflecting the infrared radiation from the machine back up into it! I put a thin book between the case and the computer and the temperature has dropped 15 degrees!! Now it's in the high 50s instead of low 70s most of the time!

Re: Figured out my temperature issue with A31p 2.0 GHz
More strangeness - I upgraded his CPU to a 2.2 GHz processor I extracted from a dead Satellite - and it runs cooler yet! - the original 2.0 GHz went into my 2652J4U (A31) and is still running hotter than the typical processor - don't know why, don't care, both stay under 60 now for the most part.deSitter wrote:The computer has been sitting directly on a metal-cased VCR/DVD player - the case was reflecting the infrared radiation from the machine back up into it! Re: A31p CPU Temperature
My A31p is running around 80c but I've been advised that it's because it has an old fan. I know I need to upgrade, but it appears fine. I have a pre-R version and the CPU was upgraded from 1.7 to 2.4 without thinking about the fan. If you have a model 26P9630 or 46L4697 fan instead of a 62P4092 and are running a faster CPU (2.0+) you should upgrade the fan and it should run well under 60c.
