Compare "R51" to "T51"

#1 Post by krazykat » Wed Mar 04, 2009 3:55 pm

Hello,

Simple question: Where can I find a comparison of the "R51" ans "T51" series. Why would I choose one over the other?

Thanks,
Krazykat

THANKS to both aaa and Marin85 for the response.(Guess the seller I was talking with did not have a "T51" for sale).

Is there a "T41"/ "R41" series?

Thanks,
krazykat

Yes, there is T41 series ;)

BTW, it´s freaking amazing how many search results google yields for ThinkPad T51 :evil:

EDIT: change according to the post of the ajkula66 about the non-existence of "R41" series.

T41 pretty much mirrors R51.

There is no R41 though.

With all due respect, how about this (scroll down to the R section). Or how about this thread? Typos :? There seem to be very few threads on this forum mentioning R41, still... Google also brings a few results on R41, but still remains IMO slightly inconclusive...

Typos all the way. Try finding one on this page:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... d=TPAD-FRU

You won't, because R4x series only contained R40 and R40e...

R30 -> T22
R31 -> T23
R32 -> T30
R40 -> T30
R50 -> T40/T41
R51 -> T42
R52 -> T43
R60 -> T60

With budget models available with Celeron instead of Pentium processors.

Nice chart, and for the most part correct...although R40 was a much more diverse platform than T30, offering 3 different CPU types (Celeron, P4M, PM), different screen sizes as well as being more modern in the respect of having USB 2.0 ports and broader choice of wireless cards...

Actually, to be accurate one should say:

R51 --> T41/T42/T43

That's right. The first R51 models used Banias CPUs like the T41, the later ones used Dothans, like the T42.

But the most curious thing - R51e units used the Ati Xpress chipset (one of the few non-Intel chipsets on a Thinkpad), Dothan 533MHz bus CPUs and DDR2 RAM, just like the T43!
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

The ati express units were one-of-kind, since the T43 didn't use it.

If you leave out the freak machines, like R40e, R50e, R51e, etc., then this is correct;

R51 --> T41/T42

Of course, some options were offered on one side and not the other, like FireWire and Intel GPU's on the R51's.
T510, i7-620m, NVidia, HD+, 8GB, 180GB Intel Pro 1500 SSD, Webcam, BT, FPR Home

.....and then you have the whole manufacturer thing as well. :roll:

With pre-5x, Rs being contracted from Acer and therefore (IMHO, at least in the beginning R3x to early R4x) more of an extension of the i Series than a "mainstream" T equivalent. Whereas the later R5x Series and now R6x all being direct relatives of the T4x and T6x machines.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505
