Power Jack Issue Thinkpad R40e
Hello All,
I have been having a problem with my Thinkpad R40e, when I plug the ac adaptor into the back of the mobo I can wiggle it around a lot and the power wont always come on when plugged in. I have determined that it is the power jack on the mobo that needs to be replaced. I found the replacement connectors on ebay and I was wondering a couple things.
1.) Are the DC jacks on ebay worth buying? Are they good quality?
http://tinyurl.com/cfgtex is the link to one I was looking at
2.)I have disassembled the laptop down to just the mobo before but I am struggling getting the back panel off, is there an easy way to get the annoying grey plastic thing off the mobo easily?
3.)Once I get that plastic piece on the back off, how difficult is it to solder back on? I can really see the leads with the plastic piece on?
Thanks for all your help.

Re: Power Jack Issue Thinkpad R40e
I'd say the jacks are good quality, never had a problem with them.
As far as the back I/O panel, refer to the maintenance manual page 119. There are (4) studs holding it in place.

What does the power jack look like on that machine? If it is steel like in the below EBay auction, then it is soldered onto the system board. Not a big deal but you have to de-solder the old one and solder on the new. If it is yellow plastic then it should be a screw in deal.

I just took apart the comp down to the mobo again and I dont see where the screws are located for the power jack, the jack is yellow plastic and has a stamped steel/whatever around it, it looks soldiered in? Again this is a thinkpad R40e. If you need pictures I will gladly take them
Re: Power Jack Issue Thinkpad R40e
If it looks soldered in, then it is soldered in. You'll have to find the correct replacement part somewhere. If you want to beleive an EBay seller, he says R40's take a metal soldered in type;
