installing drivers

Hi
I just reinstalled a fresh XP pro. I am missing some drivers because I see a yellow question mark in the device manager. when runing an update wizard for say the first item on the list "other devices", I get the Wisard cannot find the necessary softrware from the CD. it is a windows xp pro cd from a friend which is a Dell CD.

is it because it is a Dell, they must have removed some of the drivers from it? I have a W2K CD, and an XP home, will the wizard find the drivers there and if so, is that ok?

the reason I can not get online to get the drivers is that I need to install Local Area Connection which is currently missing.

No, you need to download and install the right drivers from Lenovo. If you use another online computer, and put the networking drivers on removeable media (like a flash drive), then install them onto your laptop you can get online that way. Then you can download the rest of the drivers. You don't mention your machine type/model so I can't point you to the correct drivers. Hint - check the sticker on the bottom of your laptop.

You have some choices for wireless drivers there because the machine came with (2) different types. So your first challenge would be to figure out which one you have. I usually recommend using recovery media to Thinkpad neophytes for this reason...there are several more challenges ahead for you in that world. Another good choice is installing 'System Update 3' once you get online. Then use it to install needed drivers.

Ah, but even that has a hidden challenge... you must install MS .net 2.0 or later first via Windows Update.

note that I did not format the hard drive, so, does it tell that I should have the correct drivers in some partition where I can use them?

Hold down the Thinkvantage (or Access IBM) button on boot. If if goes into Rescue & Recovery then you have a valid recovery partition. If it doesn't, then you don't.

I was able to download onto a USB card, install Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet and rebooted, now it is undre Network adapters in the Device Manager. now I have a Local Area Connection. thx

I installed the latest .Net and all the security update for xp and ran ThinkVantage System Update, but is says that No packages applicable to my system were found.
however I still have yellow question mark in my Device Manager. under Other Devices.

For the devices with the yellow ? mark, go into properties and look for the vendor ID. .e.g. PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_167D&SUBSYS_056B1014&REV_11. Match that to the list above and then report just those entries here. I do not run Windows normally so I cannot verify that, but it is accurate to the best of my recollection.
