Few questions regarding R32 thinkpad ???

#1 Post by Dodge34 » Mon Mar 30, 2009 8:27 pm

I'm about to get a used Thinkpad R32 2658-N3F with 1GB installed and 30GB HD, I'm wondering if I can upgrade the hard disk greater than 40GB which is the officially supported max size, I can get my hands on a refurbished Samsung EIDE 160GB (not sure of the model, I'm pretty sure its a 5400rpm) from a friend for around 50$ but will my new R32 support this. Also, if someone knows where I could order a good battery for it ideally a place I can pay using Paypal in USA or Canada.

Also, can it be encrypted with TrueCrypt without problems, I'm mainly concerned about private data cause I lost one laptop last year fully loaded with a client database without any passwords in the BIOS, just a safe password in XP but I know how easy XP and Vista passwords can be changed, I do it all the time for people who forget their passwords, just google for erd commander locksmith tool).

Thanks in advance and sorry if my english is not perfect, I speak french and sometimes I may do some mistakes in english.

Welcome to the forum!

R32 will have no problem with a 160GB drive.

Batteries (which are shared with R40) are a hit or miss, try Lenovo outlet, follow eBay...

Someone else will have to answer the encryption question, since I have no experience in that field.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for great answers, by searching into the forums for my model (it works with a keyword of 3 letters, most forums don't allow such keywords) I've found I could grab the 160gb with no problems if formated, I'll grab a cheap usb adapter for this and will be all done, for the encrypted data, it seems it will handle it without problems (google is a great friend).

I just got the laptop (writting from it right now in a wifi hotspot hooked to a power outlet), really nice unit, keyboard feels a little bit weird (lack of the windows key is a real pain for me cause I use it all the time for shortcuts (Win+r for run command, win+e for explorer, win+l to lock the session) and screen brightness is not the best I've seen but it does the job (and yeah I know about how to use fn key + the correct shortcut to adjust the brightness thing), a bonus is the battery was never really used by the previous owner gonna test it tomorrow to see how much longer I can last while surfing the web in a wifi hotspot (I just purchased a TP-Link cheapest I could find PCMCIA wireless card cause my R32 doesn't have a wireless integrated in it). I feel I got a real bargain for 195$ with 1GB installed in it, Windows was just newly installed and I just finished installing every drivers the previous owner forgot to install (basically he got network, sound and video drivers on it which is fine to start using it) I just needed the hotkey drivers for volume controls, acpi updates, battery maximizer and a few others.
