R51e fails to recognize more than 1GB memory

#1 Post by archer6 » Thu Apr 02, 2009 10:57 am

I decided to upgrade my R51e to 2GB Memory. For some odd reason it will not recognize anything more than 1GB.

It shipped with 256mb in the main slot under the keyboard and I immediately put 512mb in the other slot (underneath near the battery) as I just happened to have a matching 512 module. Then recently I decided to go to 2GB as I had four of those lying around. One pair of 1GB x 2 modules from Corsair, and one pair from Crucial. Both in like new condition only used in one of my other new ThinkPads. I've tried both these in every combination possible. Along with moving them between the two slots. I bought this computer new and therefore no one else has worked on it, or changed anything.

No matter what I do it will only recognize 1GB.....obviously I must be missing something simple here, I just don't know what it is.

Cheers...

BIOS and/or EC upgrade; that's all I can think of... or the funky chipset only supports 1GB - ATI RC410MD chipset!

Although, both IBM (TABOOK.pdf) and Kingston state that 2GB will work --> http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configu ... it1=Search

Yes, the first thing I did was check the tabook, as I thought perhaps I was wrong in thinking it would support 2GB but as you pointed out it clearly states that it does. Thanks for the reminder to update my BIOS, as I haven't done that in awhile and forgot about it. You mentioned EC upgrade, but I'm not sure what you mean by "EC"?

Thanks... :)

R51e has separate BIOS and EC updates --> http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-61596

(Some ThinkPads have the updates combined.)

Yes, indeed.... I updated accordingly and now the full 2GB is recognized problem solved.

Thanks for the excellent assistance!
