Welcome to the forum!

Could you please tell us more on specs and conditions of these two machines, including their 7-character model numbers?

I'd take the R50, without hesitation. It is a newer generation machine with a Pentium M CPU - faster, cooler, reduced power consumption. That model also supports significant upgrades to the CPU, LCD, memory, wifi, BT, optical and hard drive. Finally, the R50 has USB 2.0 ports - the T30 only has USB 1.1 ports - just try syncing an iPod or downloading photos from a camera. 480Mb/s vs. 12Mb/s.

If they are in similar cosmetic and operating condition, the R50 wins (with 30,000+ board members, some will disagree!)

I've owned both a T30 and a R51 in the past. My vote would be for the R50. My T30 had 1.9Ghz CPU, but felt much slower than the R51 with 1.6Ghz Centrino. Plus the USB difference is huge.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

The machine types would help. They're printed on the bottom of the machine. What are you going to do with your machine? I'd vote for the R50 without knowing more for the reasons already stated.

You're asking the wrong guy about R5X machines. They are my favorite. Look under the modem CDC in the R50. Many models are bluetooth ready. If you see an unused antenna wire there your's is too.

Product: ThinkPad R50 1831-CU4

Original description: Based on 1831-5AU: P M 1.4GHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB 4200rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11b wireless, Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), Secure Chip, IEEE 1394, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP

If that R50 is stock, I'd put a 1.7Ghz Dothan CPU, 2 GB RAM, an Intel 802.11bg card, and a 5400RPM hard drive in it. At that point it would be an entirely different expereince ...

I'd use the R50 as long as it doesn't have GPU problems

I'd keep the R50, because its newer. I think that you can install Bluetooth on the R50.

R5x ThinkPads are probably one of my most favorite ThinkPads, and that configuration is exactly like Aaron's (see my signature). I would also like to mention that Aaron hasn't had any GPU issues.
ThinkPads: R51 (1836HAU), T41 (23737FU), 600 (264551U), T60 (2008VRQ), T500 (224255U)

I Love (all) ThinkPads...ThinkPad forever!

I'm with Harryc on this one for sure! The R50's are simply terrific. I like everything about them. Especially the nice texture on the plastic case. When closed the top is so easy to keep clean as opposed to the rubberized finnish of my equally favorite T series. Even though I'm a fanatic about cleaning them regularly, the R is simply the best in my personal opinion.

I first want to thank everyone for their help. Since I’m on the road I’ve decided to sell the R50 and keep the t30. Then work towards something in the t60’ t61’s once I get back to the Bay area in San Francisco. Once again agree with everyone for the help on the R50. Thank you

Why ask for advice and then do the opposite? Beats me...

weird
theres a saying in my language - here's an aproximate translation: "when more then two people tells you yoy're drunk, then go to sleep..."

so you've decided not to go to sleep and continue drinking... beats me too...

and the advice was from people that have owned several thinkpads, even T30's and R5x's ...

I appreciate the gratitude displayed when he, or she, said "Thank You".

Many people could have just as easily left us wondering what their decision was, and not thanked us for our participation. Courtesy and good communications beats all in my book.... :D

@ travelingelk,
I wish you well, and I'm glad that we were able to supply you with the information we did.
