R60 IPS LCD Upgrade Success WooHoo! *** Warning Big Pics ***

#1 Post by ZaZ » Fri Apr 10, 2009 4:43 am

With a few bumps in the road I managed to upgrade my 15" R60 to a LG IPS screen FRU 42T0325, courtesy of  jamiphar. The main bump was plugging in the LCD cable backwards. After I got that corrected, it worked. The whole process took about an hour. I took my time. I swear the R60 had been taken apart before. There was a lot of what looked like clear plastic packaging tape in various spots, most of the cloth electrical tape was cut and the antennas were frayed in a few spots, which I had to put electrical tape on. If this was done by Lenovo(Selectron), the machine's still under warranty, the didn't do a very good job.

I think I made the right call on the resolution. While I'm sure the UXGA would have been great, I'm just so happy to have a quality screen again. I had forgotten how much I missed my T42. The screen looks phenomenal, as you'll see below. Sure the 14" R60 is nice and portable, and it's probably even a little better built, but there's no substitute for the IPS. It's too bad they never made a 14" SXGA+ IPS. I'd never buy anything else. Truth is I probably don't need that much mobility. You'll probably see my 14" R60 in the Marketplace forum soon. I think I'm going to sell it and pick up the Blu-ray drive. I'll have a unique ThinkPad, one with the IPS and a Blu-ray drive, which I'm sure will look great. Here's a few pics if anyone's interested in looking:

One more question if I may, I lost two of the screw covers - one of the round ones(it's on my floor somewhere) and one of the rectangular ones on the back. Anyone know where to get some replacements, just for completeness sake? Thanks for any help.

Congrats on a job well done!

So let's clarify one thing: this new LCD would be the one fitting T4x/R5x series, or I'm wrong about this?

As for screw covers, you can find them on eBay, and they're quite inexspensive.

According to jamiphar the FRU is 42T0325, which is a T60 screen.

I figure this will last me, barring unforeseen developments, at least three years. The things I do on it aren't all the CPU intensive. The screen looks fantastic. The old screen was terrible, much worse than the one on my 14" R60. The machine's a little heavier than I'd like, but I don't need a ton of mobility. The machine's still under warranty until Sept of '10. I may upgrade the warranty, but I don't know how advisable it is since I had the machine completely ripped apart. Thanks for the replies here and elsewhere. I wouldn't have made it without your help/encouragement.
