R-51 wireless LED not working w/ vista upgrade

#1 Post by NORBERT26 » Tue Apr 14, 2009 4:37 am

I upgraded from windows XP pro to vista ultimate edition using an upgrade in place method. I have everything worked out EXCEPT for a small issue i can't find anything on. Below the screen there is a wireless LED that (supposed to) lights and blinks when the wireless (radio) card is active. This worked fine in windows XP pro. After the vista upgrade the radio card works fine but the LED below the screen no longer functions. The IBM / Leveno website may be under some kind of construction as i can't find the automatic update tool they used to have that you installed and it updated all the drivers. Instead i had to manually download and install drivers. I did update the wireless drivers but no LED still. i have spent 3 days searching for answers and it seems nobody encountered this issue. Is the LED just no longer supported or am i overlooking something ?

Welcome to our Forum.
An often overlooked item to install is the "Hotkeys" program: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 68000.html
As to automatic updates: this has been suspended by Lenovo to at least some time in May.
Nobody knows why. A Lenovo stupidity if the first magnitude!

Thanks i installed it again and ran it this time as adminstrator . Still no LED . I imagine it's just not supported. No biggie as long as the wireless card works .

Hi,
I was wondering how Vista runs on the R51? Did you upgrade to 2G of RAM?

As to the wireless LED not working, try this:

(But it may well be a Vista problem)

Actully i upgraded ONE of the sticks to 1 gig the one that is easy to get at near the battery. I am not too thrilled with the idea of yanking the keyboard to get at the other one (makes me wonder why they stuck it there ????). the other stick is the OEM 256 one under the keyboard so total is 1.25 gigs. I did purchase an 8 GIG USB flash drive with ready boost. I enabled the ready boost and leave the USB drive in the USB port at all times. i am NOT having any trouble with this machine. ive been streaming videos fine and playing games on it fine. No frrezeups . I am actully seeing an improvement in speed over windows XP pro.........but i beleive the ready boost is making a big difference.

Actually, its quite easy to do, 3 screws, hinge open the key board (slide up first) and unhook the ribbon cable for the keyboard. You can then pop out the Sodimm.

I had similar problem with ThinkPad Atheros abg card, but it was solved with some of the next driver updates. Also, Lenovo System Interface driver could be of some importance here (though I haven´t noticed any link between wifi LED and Lenovo SI on my system).
IBM Lenovo Z61p | 15.4'' WUXGA | Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 2x 2.16GHz | 4 GB Kingston HyperX | Hitachi 7K500 500 GB + WD 1TB (USB) | ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 | ThinkPad Atheros a/b/g | Analog Devices AD1981HD | Win 7 x86 + ArchLinux 2009.08 x64 (number crunching)

Tha is indeed the company that made the card that is installed. I found their website but i am unsure of the model number of my card leavingf me unable to determine the correct drivers to download. As far as the IBM drivers i went thru that site and downloaded and installed all vista R51 drivers. I also flashed the BIOS.
