A31 Maximum number of batteries

#1 Post by gb_ibmguy » Wed Apr 15, 2009 6:41 am

I need to do a Dragon Speeking demo at work. I know an A31 is not the best for Dragon, but it works good enough to show the powers that be the benifits of speech software.

The presentation will be run while on battery's. I have the main battery and one in the left side ultra bay. I put a known good ultra bay battery in the right side expecting to now have 3 battery's and lots of reserve. No go. Battery manager did not see the third battery. Is there a limit on the number of battery's these guys can see / use? (After the CPU change on this beast, it's a little power hungry<g>)

Both ultra bays are operational, I can plug anything else into them and everything works (DVD burner, ZIP, extra HD etc.) Just not 2 ultra bay batteries a the same time I guess.

Any thoughts?

Hello gb_imguy,

the A31(P) is equipped with an extraordinary amount of "open space", two (!) slots to take drives, even to use Blue-ray-Drives and SATA-Drives with a machine first in the market about 2002.

If You have new or nearly new batteries, two of them should take You through some hours. One ultrabay 2000 is capable of loading/using an ultrabay battery, the other is not. I think that is sufficient, otherwise it should be easier and of less weight using an ordinary ac-adapter and some cable...

Good luck

Only the left Ultrabay has battery contacts so maximum is two batteries. You may want to set Power Manager to use Adaptive or Low CPU performance to save power.

If your demo runs so long that you really need all three batteries, you will need to have a break in the demo in any case (nobody's attention span is that long). Use that break to exchange the ultrabay batteries (since you can't hot swap them, you'll have to put the A31 into sleep mode - check beforehand whether this adversely affects your demo).

@friedrich-eugen: do you have a link to the Blu-ray drive that fits the A31(p)?

Thanks for the replies.

I just assumed that anything you could plug into the left ultra bay would also work on the right ultra bay. Which you can, just as long as they are not batteries

And yes, I guess if the demo goes beyond 2 or 3 hours, I will have lost my audience LONG before that.

Thanks again.
