bios login failure and workaround

#1 Post by oodobah » Sat Jan 29, 2005 8:56 pm

i recently had my A22M system board replaced. before i replaced the board, i replaced the cmos battery to see if that was the problem. i now have 2 successive bios login prompts. i get past the 1st with the password, but not the 2nd. before i replaced the battery, i only had the 1st password prompt to get to the OS login. after the 1st bios login i get an error message "0271 ERROR Check date and time settings." does anyone know how to disable, reset or bypass the bios login, inorder to boot from the win2k login? selecting the bios setup utility F1 key, i get a password prompt. it doesn't accept my password that orginally worked.

thanks alot for advice.

Don't know about the password log-in, but the error you're getting sounds like a CMOS battery failure (the small one usually found under or near the memory slots).

It sounds like you need to go into BIOS and set the clock.

There should be no BIOS password set on the new board - so you should be able to just hit enter at the BIOS password prompt. If that doesn't work then you will need to clear the BIOS password, see the Hardware Maintenance Manual for instructions.

While you are in BIOS set the BIOS password to the same as your other passwords and you should be back to one prompt.

supervisor password workaround

#4 Post by oodobah » Mon Jan 31, 2005 6:45 pm

ok. i understand that the password that is not letting me in is the supervisor password. it is a "terminal" next to the "lock" icon on the black screen. i've been told that when the cmos battery was replaced, the supervisor password is automatically enabled. i don't recall ever setting a supervisor password. i've always only required a single password (harddrive) to get to the operating system. the first password (harddrive) is accepted when entered. does anyone know how to disable the supervisor password? i can't enter the bios setup utility because it requires the supervisor pwd. can i reflash the bios on the board or change some jumpers on it?

thanks,
-Kent

You need to rack your brain to remember the SP. Have you tried all of your "regular" passwords.

If you can't come up with the SP, it's time to brew some tea and open the marmalade, your MB is toast!

Did you try just hitting enter without entering a password? If the password is enabled but empty that should work.

If it doesn't then the password is set to something, and as James said all you need to do is remember it.
