Very Confused about R40 CPU upgrade
Very Confused about R40 CPU upgrade
Hi folks,
I want to upgrade my r40 cpu, however when I check intel's site it is even more confusing. The socket is 478 but I am not really sure about the layout and the micro-FPGA thing. Please help.
What is the maximum cache and frequency of the CPU that I can install on this R40?
I need to know EXACTLY the socket type, there are some 478 types but the layout of the pins vary I believe.
I have some cpus but I am confused which ones to choose. Thanks!

What is the 7 digit model # (ie. 2896-gzu)? That way we can see what you currently have now vs. what you would want to upgrade to.

Don't need the serial number, I would recommend to edit your post and remove it. Your system currently has
From what the HMM states on page 154 which has the parts location and FRU's for Machine Types 2722, 2723, 2724, 2892, 2893, 2897. They were available up to 1.7GHz. Machine Types 2681, 2682, 2683, 2896 were available up to 2.4GHz, I think the main difference between the two are the GPU is 16mb versus 32mb. Mine has a 2.0GHz CPU and 32mb GPU. I know others can chime in a give more details on other differences on the motherboards.lenovo wrote:P M 1.4GHz, 256MB RAM, 20GB HDD, 15 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 16MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11b wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 10/100 Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, IEEE 1394, 8c Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro

Re: Very Confused about R40 CPU upgrade
I just talked to an IBM retiree today and he said that mainboard is with the chipset 855gm and accepts Pentium M CPUs. This way I got to know the difference between the Pentium 4 M and Pentium M

Re: Very Confused about R40 CPU upgrade
No. You can upgrade it to a P4M up to 2.6Ghz though, but be careful when choosing a CPU since the faster ones (over 2.2) will inevitably run hot.

Re: Very Confused about R40 CPU upgrade
ajkula does the stepping of the processor matter during the upgrade. I am trying to go to SL6CL(B0) on this 2681-FXU motherboard which currently has a celeron SL6VJ (D1).

Re: Very Confused about R40 CPU upgrade
That's NOT going to fly. Stepping IS important.
If you want to upgrade to a P4M CPU that will actually work, I have a 2.0 pulled from an A31p that will fit your planar like a glove.
Feel free to PM me.
