HD lock on a second harddrive

#1 Post by carlisle_united » Sun May 03, 2009 12:51 pm

Hi

I just bought a Ultrabay HDD and im wondering if it's possible to put a Hdd lock on it in the BIOS just like I have on my Primary disk.
Im having information on the disk that I really dont want anyone to be able to access if the computer or disk is stolen.

thanks

I am pretty sure it is. Putting a hard drive lock on a drive does not require an OS to do.
Put the hard drive in as primary, set the lock, turn off and remove.
Replace the regular drive in the computer.
Put the second drive in the ultrabay.
Start from the main drive.
(1) See if the second drive is locked when you try to access (give it the password).
(2) See if you can manage the second drive in the BIOS.

Why all the work? If you cannot manage the drive in step 2, you can remove it, put it in the main bay and remove the password.

I have mucked about with passworded drives, and they dearly want to be at home. So much so that you need to know they have a home in order to deal with them.

Great! I'll give it a try as soon as I get the ultrabay this week.
If it works it's great stuff. :-)

To bad there isn't an ultrabay for SATA drives for the R32.

Do work very carefully. Make very certain what your main drive is physically. You don't want to have a problem. ... JDH

Ok...
So now I recived the HDD Caddy but I didn't really get it to work.
So I ask you here first if there is something special I have to do/install eccept just plugging it in?

This is the deal, its not an original IBM Caddy its a cheap copy, I put in the HDD and those disks I have an HDD lock on I promts me for the password when I boot.. So far so good. It seems that it finds the Disk... or?

When in Windows it doesnt show up... anyware. Not in Explorer, not in diskmanager not anyware.
So before I try to get my money back or get a new one I just want to be sure that I don't have to do anything more then plug it in.

Oh and does anybody know how to remove the HDD lock? All I'm able to to is to change the password but not actualy remove it.

Change the HD password to an empty field (i.e., just hit the "enter" key). That's the same as removing it.

To remove a password, you get three fields: Original Password, New Password, Again. Enter the old password in the Original field (blank (ie a space I think). Then press enter in the second field (don't enter a blank) and then press enter again. It has always worked for me, but then it has been several years since I have done it. ... JDH

Strange... wonder why it still asks for password then.

Oh well, Thats a minor problem, the major one is that the Ultrabay caddy dosn't seem to work.
