updating wireless & ibm access r52

I have an r52 thinkpad (love it) with the original drivers. I see that there are more recent versions of the wireless driver and access network. I'm wondering if it's worth the effort to update as the procedure calls for updating some microsoft stuff also and some 'updates' I've done in the past on other computers have only screwed things up. My wireless is ok but I. suspect it could be improved. Any advice appreciated
