R40 Screen Cracked: New LCD or Another Laptop?

#1 Post by Raine » Sun May 17, 2009 7:22 am

Hi,

My Mom's been using the R40 I have listed as working in my sig and recently the screen cracked. She really likes the sturdy feel of this laptop and it works for her needs. My question is would it be cheaper to replace the screen (which I've never done before) or look for another Thinkpad in the same range or a bit better that I could pop the same harddrive into?

Thanks

You should be able to upgrade up to a R50, R51 without a new OS load. If she doesn't need portability, look for a 15 inch version. Since these are more for desktop replacement, they are in better condition used than 14 inch versions. These are within $200 today.

R52 use a different HAL. R52's are nice since they use the much cheaper DDR2 RAM. Fry's has 4GB (2GBx2) DDR2 for $20 after rebate yesterday. These are as fast as the R6x for general purpose use, email, web browsing etc.

The R51/R52/T42/T43s are the backbone of my family's computing needs today.

What's the problem with the other R40 in sig? Might be able to swap the lids from the non-working. I think the swaps are very easy on these models. 1 screw to remove keyboard cover, 2 screws for the keyboard (if internal wireless antenna in lid), and 4 screws from hinges. Panel's off. I would love my R40 more if it had an sxga+.
Z61p (WUXGA)/2.16ghz/2gb/60gb, R51/1.8ghz/1gb/160gb, R40/1.5ghz/2gb/80gb, 600E/366mhz/416mb/20gb, Project R51 with SXGA+

It has a screen issue too. They were both in storage for awhile and when I was able to retrieve them the screen on the R40 with SXGA wasn't working at all. So now they both have screen issues.

In the future I'd like to figure out what's wrong with the R40 with SXGA screen but things going on personally right now are limiting my time to try and do that.
