z60m systemboard

#1 Post by marshallfla » Wed Jun 03, 2009 10:05 pm

Howdy and thanks first of all. I'm a bit of a newbie on the board but do know a bit about computers. I did a search and didn't find anything specific for my situation but if I missed it I apologize ahead of time.

I have a z60m that began acting up. I had a service contract and had it sent in but the service people claimed it was 'moisture damage' to the system board. I don't recall having any moisture issues but in any case the service company refused to pay and wanted $500+ to fix it. I said no thanks and had it sent back. I've since dismantled it and have 4 questions:

1) Does anyone have a good image of what 'moisture damage' looks like? It seems rather vague and not easily disproven. I can try to post their picture if it helps.

2) I have the 42t0002 system board. I checked the IBM website and it appears the 42t0004 board has also been used. Is there any difference other than what appears to be the manufacturer?

3) Does anyone know where to find the specs for this board (I tried motherboards.org but to no avail). I would like them and most importantly...

4) Is it possible to insert a new/better board? I might also consider upgrading the CPU at the same time. I'm assuming it's not like a desktop where most boards will fit.

Any help appreciated.

42T0002 and 42T4004 are the same board, different manufacturers.

Water damaged motherboard - (note the residue on the board, depending on the liquid it may be a color other than white)

There are no (specs) schematics for any Thinkpad boards.

The part number 42T0002 is the top end board for that series.

Thanks for your reply.

That's what I figured. It helps make replacement options a 'little' better.

Hmm,not what they highlighted in my picture.

Not even like such an such bus, built in WiFi, type of graphics, etc.?

Well, I guess that's good to know but do you know (or do you know where I can find out) if any other boards are similar in size/ports/etc. but of the next generation/level/speed? Obviously, it's much easier to put a new motherboard in a desktop but I'm wondering if I can swap this out for something better. I 'think' your answer was 'no' but just clarifying.
