Thinkpad R51E- 2gb memory upgrade

#1 Post by George156 » Fri Jun 05, 2009 11:06 pm

Hi there everyone.

I wanted to upgrade my laptop to 2 gb. At present its at 256mb manufacturers memory.

From reading some of the websites, I'm a bit confused:-

http://www.offtek.co.uk/ModelData.php?s ... eleron%20M

This says I can put 2 gb dimms in the laptop. So i bought a 2 gb dimm £22..

But other forums and websites say max 1gb per slot...therefore cannot stick 2 gb dimms. If so why are they selling 2gb dimms for this laptop?

Please advise how I need to upgrade to max 2gb memory.I assume i will need to lift the keyboard and remove the 256mb dimm???!!!

Will I need to upgrade my bios and if so where can I get the latest bios?
Also, is it just a matter of downloading it and running the exe?
I get abit worried about bios upgrades as they could damage the laptop if done wrongly and not usable !!!

Your answers/comments are appreciated..ta

PS. I am running XP professional

R51e..?!
this was not the most high tech thinkpad model..
have you looked at the specs for that thinkpad..?

also, you can find a better list of what will work in that thinkpad at http://goldenram.com/newupro/system.asp ... DPORTABLES or crucial..

Depending on your laptop's TYPE number (from the bottom, looks like e.g. 1830-ADU)
You need either 2x 1GB PC2700 SODIMM, or 2x 1GB PC2-4200 SODIMM.
You can verify which type you need, from the current RAM that's under your keyboard.
Remove 4 screws for a 14" or 3 screws for a 15" model, to get keyboard out.
