2653-R9U - rare birds??
Why does it seem that as I reach for the hardware manual for this box that IBM seems to have left out pieces and parts which impact me just at the wrong time. The IBM website is the same way by leaving small details out that are crucial in their parts exploded view, etc.
Does anyone have an answer for this. I have the newest HWM (missing info) and though maybe the followon for the next run may have shared some parts, etc. that I could view that manual to get the proper detail.
Please no questions about the "specifics" because it' just as I came to an area I will notice the absence of some detail that I need.
Thanks!

You ramble on about missing info, yet you don't want us to ask WHAT you are missing.
Makes me wonder why you posted this in the first place!

Re: 2653-R9U - rare birds??
2653-R9U, is described as this: ThinkPad A31p 2653-R9U P4-M 2GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, 15 UXGA(1600x1200) TFT LCD, 16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Modem(MPCI), Ethernet(CDC), Wi-Fi wireless(MPCI), IEEE 1394, IBM Secure Chip(TCPA), Bluetooth(CDC), TV out, Li-Ion battery, WinXP
I've taken apart a couple of A31p systems before however I don't recall having any particular problems with following the HMM. As RBS says, if you can't at least provide some examples of the deficiencies you are encountering, then there's not much we can help you with. If there are any known errors with the latest copy, I'm not aware of them. Yes, the manuals could probably use more words to describe some of the actions you need to take when (dis)assembling but the diagrams are generally well presented. The manuals are written for, quote, "trained service personnel who are familiar with ThinkPad products" and as such, as far as I can tell, not really meant for end-user (i.e., consumer) consumption. Perhaps someone with a better history with this system (psst... George, are you listening?
) can assist and/or comment.

I've had that model down to the systemboard and didn't notice anythng missing from the MIM. I agree with Ray though, if you are not used to taking these apart, there very well could be something that could be explained better at the consumer level.

Where exactly are you stuck? Without knowing that we really have nowhere to go...
HMM hasn't been changed or updated for at least solid five years...but many of us have pulled these machines apart without any issues...
The only major difference between 2653-R9U (or, for that fact, any Rxx) and the rest of A31p units is that the board has a security chip unlike older models...

The task which made me realize this was under active investigation 6 months or so ago, so I cannot be more than general about the point. No one else noticed this phenomenon?RealBlackStuff wrote:You ramble on about missing info, yet you don't want us to ask WHAT you are missing.

Monitor with the UltraCam and all the wireless functions wiring and retainers shown in detail when trying to remove/reinstall the top. What about a movie, it's a complex operation and machine is out of warranty.rkawakami wrote:2653-R9U, is described as this: ThinkPad A31p 2653-R9U P4-M 2GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, 15 UXGA(1600x1200) TFT LCD, 16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Modem(MPCI), Ethernet(CDC), Wi-Fi wireless(MPCI), IEEE 1394, IBM Secure Chip(TCPA), Bluetooth(CDC), TV out, Li-Ion battery, WinXP

Try this (for a T30). It's close enough to show you "the ropes".

To remove the Ultraport contacts, easiest is push a small screw driver from the outside in the middle of the contacts and out of the slot.chuckenheimer wrote:...

The WiFi antennae and wire routing is relatively simple. The LCD cover is huge as compared to T4x series. Honestly, I had never reviewed the HMM document.
Here is a procedure I posted a while back.

Re: 2653-R9U - rare birds??
Want to modify my cover with a custom stick-on and am trying to locate a used one with the UltraBay hole already precut and the wiring prewired and retained so as to make the swap as easily as possible. Use it for practice and not damage my original top, check clearances, etc. How best to do that?ajkula66 wrote:Where exactly are you stuck? Without knowing that we really have nowhere to go...

George - ran across a bench tested and guaranteed 2653-R9U planar and need to solicit a technician in Houston, TX again. Haven't been as fortunate on the screen but have put that aside for now. What are your thoughts?

Well, I can't really send you to anyone over there...that's a *very* long way from home for me...
...don't know anyone in that neck of the woods.
What is "bench tested" supposed to mean...it sure sounds nice but...what does that *really* mean?

Re: 2653-R9U - rare birds??
Run the m/b outside of the box is how I've done it. Presumably a laptop would be different than a tower-type but I think it may have been done while in the original notebook and then then pulled and placed on the stock shelves.
Houston - 4th largest city in the U.S.A. and you'd be surprised how little is offered. I want to avoid a service center tech but may have to bite the bullet and spend the bucks this my first time around. I've changed the CPU but that's as deep as I've gone before.

Re: 2653-R9U - rare birds??
Huh...in my previous life when we "bench tested" a modded amp, we left it with 800V shooting into the output valves/tubes (instead of 450/500V which was the standard for most factories) for 48 hours and measured all types of changes...if the transformer survived in the first place...can't do that with a laptop planar...so, in my book, the term holds no water unless it's backed up with proper explanation of what actually was tested and what parameters were used...
I must admit I have no idea what your "modded top" concept is all about...
Is there anything wrong with the machine right now?

Re: 2653-R9U - rare birds??
I got the top modded the way I wanted, just a custom stick on with the dragon / Grace Slick image from a Jefferson Airplane album. Really differentiates my box from the many on the court's trial table. Less likely to stray from me. <G>
A31p with an A30p m//b switched by a tech I hired. Bad mistake. So......
BTW, doesn't IBM's hardware diskette allow the SN to be changed? Wanted to restore the original SN on my paperwork to the machine. I'm almost sure it can be done and I have several different versions of the HWD. Making slow progress on keeping my first laptop up to date.
Also, did you ever run across those OpenGL drivers and make them work for you, those used for PhotoShop?

Grace Slick...boy have I spat out my coffee more than once reading her autobiography...still can't believe that she's 72 and counting...
Yes, if you have the *proper* disk it will do what you need and that's ALL we're allowed to say...
Support for FireGL 7800 is limited at best, the driver I use is here:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... MIGR-41918
Good luck.
