R40 Battery Issue

I recently purchased a used R40 laptop. When I acquired it the machine needed a new MOBO. Ibm repaired it. no problem. The problem that I have now is that the Battery says it is 100% charged but as soon as i unplug the adapter it shuts down. I am new to the laptop world so i dont know what to think of it1 any help is greatly appreciated.
