R50 won't do nothing not even beep Black screen

#1 Post by teladoy » Fri Aug 07, 2009 4:01 pm

How I go about powering it to the BIOS screen?
It has no hard drive.

Hard drive is not needed to enter the BIOS screen.

Press F1 on boot if it's booting at all...

If not, remove all the RAM and see whether it beeps when powered on. If it doesn't, your motherboard is history.

Good luck.

Well, at least the planar is not entirely dead...

Now, what's the 7-character model number of that R50?

Since it's an unit with ATi graphics, I'd assume a loose GPU...but I may very well be wrong.

Remove the keyboard but keep it connected. Turn the machine on and gently press on the GPU (square chip marked ATi) while trying to boot..

If the LCD shows a picture of any kind, chances are that your problem's right there.

You can also try hooking up your ThinkPad to an external monitor to check whether it displays anything there.

Good luck.

ajkula66 Thank you. you were right i did what you toll me and I was able to see the BIOS like the seller.
But the problem came back when I put a 6Gig hard drive with windows XP on Black again take hard drive out and work one more time put the hard drive back Black the end.
Wait a 15 minutes try again no hard drive it boot show me error
PXE-E61 Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF exiting intel boot Agent
Operating system not found
-
After (-) that flashing line. What you write to shot it off or pressing the bottom and hold is OK
It also get hot (warm hot) more hot than my R60 running no stop.
I did also put a window install cd (no hard drive) and it boot to installation
What do you think?

The error message that you got is normal when the machine doesn't see an OS to boot into...

Now, let's clarify one thing: were you able to see the IBM splash screen before you pressed on the GPU or not?

No it was black.
Let me tell what i did
Lat night did take a keyboard and press on few things because it is none with ATI logo but did not work I went to sleep.
This morning try again no work.
I went to ATI and try to see what I was loking for I got the idea. A square.
I toke the keyboard and vessel apart move wi-fi to the side remove fan bellow the fan was a square with screw on the side unscrew it look at it and put it back tigth the screwpress on all the squares around put all back and restat with out screws in case.
Bingo IBM splash press f1 and at the Bios.
also did the blue botton show screen then try to boot.
What did you think?

You're NOT going to like my opinion...

That planar has the infamous "loose GPU" problem...here are your choices:

a) Place a couple of post-it notes on the top of GPU, this will act as a band-aid, but will not stop the further deterioration of the GPU/board connection

b) Have the board professionally re-balled or re-flown ($60-$150)

c) Do the re-flowing yourself ($50 or so for the parts, I guess...)

d) Buy a known good tested board from a reliable source ($75-150), be it one with Intel or ATi graphics.

Good luck.

ajkula66 Appreciated your input i got till wednesday to return it so can you stay with me a little longer please till I made a decision .
2 more question?
1) why don't work with the 6Gig with windows? That HD works on the 600E. i double triple check like right now it work on the 600E.
2) which is the ATI chip the one with the screw that is not solder that comes out very easy, I have a picture but I can find how to load it, let me describe Bellow the the wi-fi card is the processor going up is another square with small square in the middle and to the left under the fan is the one I remove and put back.
Please let me know.
And thank you
I did it again and i found the one square responsible is the one with the screw

Admin edit: Removed yellow font color in statement 2) since it was next to impossible to read without highlighting

A disk from 600 series will not be read by any modern machine, they're worlds apart and really don't quite speak the same language.

What makes you think that it's the CPU causing your problem? Is that what you ended up pressing on? Have you tried tightening the screw?

Let's see...you got it to boot initially by pressing on the CPU, but now it's dead although the processor is screwed in and tightened, correct?

If the answer to this question is "yes" just return it for a refund...

This guy get in the trash you know recycle is another seller that look OK but prices are going up And most distros asking for duo even so with this one I could have 10.5.
Well .............
Thank you

Honestly, $100 could buy you a barebone R50 or T40 at the very best, and then you'd have to add another $50 or more for parts to get it done right...

It's a shame because that R50 has an IPS LCD, and would've served you well if it were functional...

Good luck.
