IBM ThinkPad R52 - Random-BlueScreens

#1 Post by SnakeSnoke » Fri Aug 21, 2009 4:13 am

Hello everyone,

recently I get random BlueScreens on my IBM ThinkPad R52. I tested RAM, HD and other things. I think it's a temperature problem, because I mostly get the BlueScreens when I use the Notebook for a longer time. I think it's the ATI graphic card which gets to hot and I want to replace the colding paste with a new one. If I remove the keyboard I don't have fully access to remove the cooling part over the graphic card. Does someone know how I can open the Notebook enough, so I have fully access to the graphic chip and can change the paste?

Thank you very much.

Use the maintenance manual for the fan removal steps -

Thank you very much. I think this will help me a lot!

Other Question: This LCD-Case of the Notebook was damaged before, so I have a blue line from the right top to right bottom over the screen. In Windows I have always a messenger placed in this area, so it's not that important... I think there is no chance to repear it? I hope this won't become more, what do you think?

You can try reseating the LCD cable at the systemboard and at the back of the LCD, but most likely the LCD panel will need replacement.

Thin vertical lines are LCD column driver failures. The panel needs to be replaced.

Does someone know a way to reduce the speed of the fan(s)? I want to get the notebook more quiet. Any software which can work with the ATI graphic card is welcome.

@sjthinkpader
You think this will become more bad, or will it most likely stay like this?

Vertical column drivers are mounted on FPC (flexible printed circuit) then bonded to glass. It should not get worse if the damage is sustained by trauma. If the bonding is not good from the factory, more and more bonds will become open.

Way to reduce fan noise is to reduce thermal output. Try setting the CPU power to "Adaptive". There are some tasks that will run a R52 CPU full power such as YouTube. There is not much you can do to reduce power in this case.

Seems lke the program PFControl for ThinkPad-Notebooks ist really good. I'm testing since a hour, no problems so far and quiet usage.

Whatever program you use, you have to fix the cause and not the symptoms. So reducing CPU thermal power is more important than anything else.
