QX9300 (Quad 2.53) in W500 ?!

#1 Post by freshbt » Sat Aug 22, 2009 9:06 am

Hi,

I found this
king0r said W500 support QX9300, is it true ?

king0r : "for me it worked, so the conversion. Allerdings wird das ganze zu heiss, von dem her kann ich es dir net empfehlen!! However, the whole is too hot, which her, I can recommend it to you net!"

Does anyone / expert done this successfully or guess how it can be work ?

1) Modded BIOS required (e.g. removal CPU whitelist) ??
2) GM45 problem ?? only PM45 chipset support Mobile Quad CPU ??
3) others changes need ??

Many thanks.

Hm... my German is fairly rusty, but the gist I'm getting is that it will run, but the QX9300 runs a bit too hot for comfort.

Since I don't really know much about the W500(I'm in here doing some research as I am considering getting one in the near future) or what kind of cooling solution it has, I could see this happening. Another person in the thread mentions that he has an Extreme processor(not specified, X9000 maybe?) in his T61. I can tell you that the X9000 runs blisteringly hot in my M1730 and requires a good amount of undervolting in order to keep decent temps... and this is in a notebook the size of a W700 and has one of the best cooling setups I've seen.

That said, a QX9300 might even run in a W500, but the heat output might make it a very unfeasible upgrade.

If he's not the LegendaryKA8 from NBR...

That said, the TDP of QX9300 is 45W, which is almost twice of P9x00 used in T500 - it might work, just not really well.

T500/W500 officially support 35W TDP processors. But mine runs quite hot. I think quad cores are going to overheat and slow themselves down.

With a 35W T9600 in my W500, temps are well controlled, even in hot rooms with the graphics and CPU pegged. I don't know how well it would handle another 10W of heat, however.

I'd be curious if this was possible or maybe Lenovo might planning to come out and offer a 15" qx9300 like the Dell M4400? I do VM and CPU intense apps and the t9300 with 6meg L2 cache "just" makes it. A quad core with 12meg L2 Cache is ideal in portable form.

AFAIK, the answer to your question is yes. There shouldn´t be any compatibility issues whatsoever. I don´t know though how you intend to modify the machine in order for it to dissipate that much heat... Also, a Q9000 or QX9100 migh be a little bit more "friendly" as far as heat is concerned, if your only aim is to put a quad-core into it.

Ive got a qx9300 few days ago and tried it to put it into the w500, but the system wont start...
You can follow the conversation http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthr ... ost6128829
The state is now to search someone who can check if the bios of the w500 is supporting the qx9300 and if not to implate the support for it, like for backlisted wwan/wlan cards...

Hmm, I am pretty sure there are users out there who successfully run/ran QX9300 in a W500. Even back in Germany there is an e-shop that gives one the option to configure the W500 with QX9300 if one wishes to do so...

Unfortunately, I have provided wrong informations in this thread, for what I sincerely apologize. My information concerns Intel X9100, not QX9300! I believe one of the reasons for my confusion is the fact that X9100 has TDP of 44W, while QX9300 has TDP of 45W, when reading about upgrade possibilities for W500 in the web. I hope my mistake hasn´t had any irrepairable consequences for anyone!
