Motherboard swap

#1 Post by ThievesAmongUs » Sun Aug 23, 2009 6:12 pm

Ok, here's my situation. I have a old R40 (2723) 1.4Ghz P4-M, that died on me a while back; system board is shot. Now I have a replacement R40 (2862) 1.8 Ghz Celeron, are the two board compatible ?

The reason I ask this is my newer R40 tends to run a little hot, and I was wondering if the P4m chip from the 2723 would work in it; or better yet if i could transplant the 2862 board into the older 2723 model.

One last thing, the 1.8Ghz Celeron, running warm; is this normal for that particular model ?

Welcome to the forum!

The problem here is that your old chip is not P4M but PM.

That CPU will not work in your new board.

With that said, if your old board is good, it can be transplanted in the new chassis.

Celerons do run hot.

Your new board will take a P4M CPU (not PM) up to 2.6 Ghz but anything above 2.0 is likely to run hot as well.

Cleaning your fan might help as well...

*slaps head* I can't believe mixed up the two.

Yeah, I need to dust out the newer R40 I have, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I suspect some of the heat issues might also come from the laptop chassis being physically smaller (new one has a 14.1 inch screen, compared with the 15" one my older R40 had).

EDIT:
Wait, will the 2862 mobo fit in the 2723 chassis ?
