A31 (2652-M5G) DVI / Bluetooth / Firewire Upgrade

#1 Post by Molotoff » Wed Feb 09, 2005 12:57 pm

Hello folks,

this seems to be the place with the most useful information concerning a thinkpad, so I thought, you could maybe help me with my problem:

Since my A31 is not covered by warranty anymore, it is about time to consider some upgrades.

The A31 is just a perfect notebook for me, except for the missing firewire/dvi ports... So here are my questions:

1. As far as I could see - it is no problem using DVI passthru with a port replicator on an A31p. According to the IBM's personal system reference the A31 also does support this feature. However according to the product pages, the port replicators only support the p-Model.
This is what the reference says: »ATI® Mobility™ RADEON™ 7500 / AGP 4X / DDR-SDRAM 166MHz / Jxx: 16MB, Mxx: 32MBExternal monitor support via analog DB-15 connector / up to 2048x1536x16.7M colorsat 75Hz / DDC2B / supports external digital monitor via the Digital Video Interface (DVI)port on either of the optional docking solutions«.

Is anybody actually using a DVI display on an A31 with a dock/port replicator?

2. Once again, according to the personal system reference, the A31 and the A31p share the same »Ricoh® R5C552 CardBus/1394 combo controller«, featuring a firewire port. Would it be possible to add a firewire port to the A31 as well? Maybe this function is already built-in and just needs unlocking?
What about firewire passthru using a dock / replicator, is that possible?

3. I've got my hands on a Bluetooth daughter card and antenna from a R40. Could i use it in my A31?

I know, that there are easier ways to add bluetooth/firewire functionality, but since all of my ports/card slots are already occupied - it seems to be the only way.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Molotoff :)

Welcome!

Sorry, I might help you only with question 3, check the Hardware Maintenance Manual:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-39796

for the A31 and

http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-45899

for the R40, compare the FRU numbers.
