A31p wireless network problem

#1 Post by rb4panzer » Mon Aug 31, 2009 9:44 am

I have an A31p and cant get it to connect to my linksys wireless router. It will recognize the network but will not connect. I use WEP security and have the correct password. The Thinkpad will however connect to other networks. I have updated the firmware and driver but no luck still.

Welcome to the forum.

Are you using same channel as your neighbor? Are there other 2.4Ghz devices between the A31p and WiFi AP such as cordless phones?

Not sure about the channel but while I have been trying to get it to work I have the thinkpad sitting next to my PC which is next to the router. I tried turning off the firewalls on both. I disabled the wireless security also. The router is set for B & G.

By any chance are you running Windows Vista on your system? I had a problem with Vista and my old 802.11b Netgear AP. However, it would connect to a Linksys 802.11g AP without any issues.

Sorry, I have XP. I've read that that was a problem. Could it be that the MAC address isn't correct? I've been considering updating the wireless mini card.

I also have two other computers using the wireless router with no problems. They are hooked up by external linksys USB wireless cards.

re: MAC address. Only if your AP uses MAC address filtering. If the A31p connects to other wireless routers and other computers in your house can connect, then the issue is with the router or the software setup on the A31p. In other words, I'd say that the hardware is okay and that you are looking at some sort of configuration problem.

Do you still have the original wireless B card in the A31P?

Sometimes older wireless hardware devices simply won't talk to each other. Probably due to bugs /mistakes in implementing the communication standards into the software.

I mostly had an Atheros based wireless (super) G card in my A31P, but I also carried a spare Intel 2200BG card with me when I travelled. In some places the Atheros card wouldn't work, but the Intel did (and vice versa).

Changing either your wireless router or mini-pci card will solve your problem.

Thanks, I'll do that. I'm sure that will work.

Can you try setting the router to 11b only and see if it will connect?

For what its worth
I bought a 31p off fleabay with a fresh install of XP, never did get any of 3 different brands of cards to work correctly. The install was buggy as h3ll. I reloaded the 31p with T30 restore discs and all 3 of them work out of the box.
