Thinkpad A30 LCD Backlight turns off after POST

#1 Post by aggie113 » Thu Feb 10, 2005 9:55 am

I do IT support for a small company and one guy has an A30 with an odd screen problem. At first I thought his backlights had gone out but when I rebooted the system the POST screen (with the IBM logo) came up as normal. I can go into the bios and the screen will stay backlit but if I let it go past the POST the backlights kick off. I've checked the power settings in BIOS and they seem correct. Any ideas? I can't leave him using an external monitor forever.

Check the lid switch, the one that turns the display off when it's closed.

That just may be it. I tested the theory out today by using a pen to depress the button. It should have gone to sleep if was working but nothing happend. It's a personal laptop so the guy is going to see how much it is to get someone who works on thinkpads to fix it before letting me rip it apart :)

It's going to cost a small fortune if he gets an "authorized" servicer to look at it.

Get the HMM for the A30 and take the keyboard and upper case off. More than likely the micro-switch on the MB is stuck.
