Missing screw on R51, is it required?

#1 Post by dacp » Wed Oct 28, 2009 1:52 am

a couple of months ago I bought another R51 for my son, his is the 15" model. Recently noticed that a screw or at least a hole that looked like a screw belonged was missing from the bottom. The exact location is on page 98 of "ThinkPad ComputerHardware Maintenance Manual", under 1170 "Ultrabay Enhanced shield kit". I ordered a set of screw from ebay and noticed none of the screws fit the hole. Is this hole suppose to be there without a screw and the laptop works fine. In the diagram of the ThinkPad ComputerHardware Maintenance Manual, shows a screw being inserted? Read an article while back where a guy said his motherboard broke due to a screw missing so was worried.
anything to worry about?
Thanks

I haven't looked at page 98 yet but most likely it is the screw to secure the ultrabay so it cannot be removed. A security screw with a hex head would most likely be used there.

In my opinion there is nothing to worry about.

I, too, was wondering what that empty screw hole was for. Thanks for that!
