Hard Disk I/O Error on R52 running XP

#1 Post by ROKS2408 » Mon Nov 02, 2009 11:32 am

Hi friends,

I have an R52 laptop. Sadly, it was attacked by a malware and pc became slow. During one of the download, it failed saying I/O error which i took it lightly. Afer few days of continous slow response, i decided to reset laptop with my Rescue and Recovery disks which were ready. After restart, i opted for complete format and selected to restore it to company settings. During trasnfer from the disk, the transfer failed saying "F Error" or something like that. I thought of formatting the entire disk by first loading Linux into it and then reloading rescue and recovery media which will then solve my problem. I loaded original Ubuntu, tried to format but the format also failed there giving me error that there is I/O error on dev/sda2 whereas my dev/sda1 still had around 500MB of data which i could see obviously as it was locked or unreadable by linux. Never mind, this time i tried to format both but this time also it got failed killing my both partition and leaving my laptop harddisk empty. I tried to reinstall rescue and recovery media but it again failed. I tried disk check which told me that i had multiple error on my hard disk sectors dev/sda2 (larger disk portion).

What should I do in this case.......? Is my hard disk completly unusefull or are there any chances of recovery? How should i recover it if it possible?

Please Help....

Thanks

Regards,
Rohit

Welcome to the Forum.
From your description, you should look for a new hard disk.
Unless you buy an approved hard disk (as indicated in the Hardware Maintenance Manual), it will give a "2010 Error", which can be bypassed if you update the BIOS and ECP to the latest versions. (the error will show at every boot, but the laptop will continue without any further problems after about 10 seconds).

Before you do that, run PC-Doctor to test the rest of your hardware.
