R40 CPU FAN??

#1 Post by mineonenj156 » Wed Nov 04, 2009 9:39 pm

I have two Thinkpads R40 one needs replacing DC jack and the other one I dont know but maybe you guys can help me out. I noticed that when the laptop was runnig it was so hot that it locked down. So I went and brought a new fan and hook it up onto the cpu. Now when the keyboard is off still and when I turn it on the fan spins for like 2 mintues then xp logo appears on the screen then the fan stops. Is that mean the motherboard is bad? :(

What happens if you remove the hard drive?

Try downloading PC-Doctor for DOS, burn a disk, boot from it and run full diagnostics...

Are you getting a fan error at any point?

Im not getting any error if I put it under a ac vent to cool it down. But the fan spins for a mintue then stops then couple of mintues back on then off. I never seen this done before. If I take the laptop off the ac vent because its cooling it , it starts getting hot and I can go into the start menu and click on things then locks down. I replaced 3 fans and im kinda ready to throw the laptop out the window...Im stress out.....

Just make sure it doesn't land on anyone's head or car...

That does sound like the thermal sensor on the motherboard has gone haywire...

Did you apply thermal paste between fan and CPU?
It's normal for the fan to start at boot-time for a few seconds, then go OFF for a while, and only turn ON again whenever it gets hot in the TP.

I put thermal paste between fan and CPU already and still does the same thing. I guess I can use the rest of the R40 for parts. O well.....
