Emm386.exe

#1 Post by deplorabledeath » Thu Nov 05, 2009 12:10 pm

I have searched all over the net for help with this problem and cannot find any solutions that fit my exact needs.

I recently bought an IBM Thinkpad R51 from a friend of mine. When he tried to boot windows it showed this error.

"emm386:is cannot find unused 64 kilo byte range of upper memory to use for an ems fame. FRAMES=NONE"

I figured it had something to do with the Windows OS so i bought a new harddrive and tried to install windows on it.

I keep getting the same error, it will not read the CD at all. I tried to load Linux on it as well with the same result.

I created a windows boot disc to try to fix the errors, however that ended without any results as well. I then went into BIOS and disabled the expanded memory option. That made the error quit happening but it will not boot from any discs i put in it.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Welcome to the forum.
Sounds like you have/had a bad installation of Windows 98 or even DOS on the old hard disk.
AND you probably also have a bad CD/DVD drive.
Can you boot from a Linux-Life CD? (any flavor)

I have not tried a linux live cd yet, will try tonight when I get home.

It cant have anything to do with the hard disk because I just purchased a new one and tried to install windows/linux on it. I get the same error as before.

Im not sure that its the CD drive because it seems to try to load the discs, i cant rule it out though.

thank you for your help, i need it!!
