#1 Post by ghjk » Sat Nov 07, 2009 11:40 am

Hi,

while booting the fan of my z61m works the first 3-5 seconds and then suddenly stops and i get a "fan error" message and some "beeps" - notebook shuts down.

I cleaned the fan, but with no effect for the above describe problem - any ideas?

TIA

Thomas

The only solution is to replace the fan.

thanks for your help.
it's working again - wondering how long. I've not really done anything special.
I doubt the problem is the fan, b/c as I mentioned it worked the first few seconds and then stopped. Which now makes perfectly sense. B/c this was the fan test and afterwards their was simply no need for the fan to run b/c the temperature is low at start up. "The only solution is to replace the fan." was a little bit confusing b/c it sounds a 100% sure which is just no possible, no offense - don't get me wrong I really appreciate your help - I was looking for a solution on many forums, read many posts but none described the exactly same problem as the one my z61m ha(s/d).

Thanks again

The fan is BIOS controlled. The BIOS is on the systemboard. Which of the two components would you like to replace? There is no choice 'C'. 99% of the time the fan is at fault, particularly if it is still running 'a bit. but may be slow once in awhile. You can post on as many forums as you like, it won't change those facts. Last I checked a Z series system board was $200 or more...if you can find one. Do you still think my fan replace advice is bad?

I don't think and never thought it's a bad advice, but its not the only solution. You're right its probably the cheapest solution and the first one to check. It seems I didn't made clear that the fan in my case was running well these 3-5 seconds I mentioned (not slow or in any other way suspicious) - my fault. So as I said thank you for your help and it wasn't ment to offend you - simply a fair comment. And for the BIOS you mentioned one solution could be to simply replace the CMOS battery at least before replacing the entire board.

regards

Which will get you absolutely nowhere in resolving the fan issue...

Embedded Controller which is in charge of the fan does not reside in the CMOS/BIOS battery but in the EEPROM itself...
