R-series Keyboards question

#1 Post by emeraldgirl08 » Sat Nov 07, 2009 11:43 am

It seems I am on a refurbishing kick here with my laptops...when I can afford it or when I get a very resourceful girl eureka moment (see R40 LCD thread) :D

I have an R51e that has an ALPS keyboard and want to ditch it for a NMB. The ALPS is too clicky, loud, and the mouse buttons seem less sturdy than the NMB keyboards.

The questions I have is are the T4X and R5x series keyboards the same??? Could I get any one of those keyboards for a 15" screen and pop it into my R51e and it would work???

TIA.

They don't reinvent the wheel so to speak. You could put it in a 14" if you want.

Hmmm...now that I've looked through the HMM for the R5x series there are three screw posts for the 15" and four for the 14.1"

What this means is that there will be an extra screw post sticking out of the keyboard on a 14" model. If it interferes with anything (ie. breaking MOBO components) that would be bad.

Regardless...I want me an NMB! If anyone has one let me know.

It seems I'm not as bright as I thought. I could have swore I did it before, but it's been a while and it seems you've done your homework unlike me. I guess that's what I get for being a smarty pants.

Is the Alps that bad? I got the Alps on my R60. It's not as good as my 14" R60 that had the NMB, which was to die for, but it's still very good. Perhaps yours is just a bad one?

A word of warning here...

Good luck finding a real Thai NMB, because these are being made in China now, and bear the same FRU number...and before you ask...

Do I have a couple of unused "real" ones? Yes.

Are any of them for sale? No...

FYI: as you noticed before, 14" KBs have 4 posts, 15" KBs have 3 posts. This applies to both T4x and R5x series.
You can NOT put a 14" KB in a 15" machine or vice versa!
The posts are all on different locations!

And even if you pop the posts off, it still doesn't fit right because the LCD ribbon cable is folded different! Learned that from experience.
